These are three disturbing things I’ve seen on television in the past week.
1. Anyone ever watch that station “Versus” at all? I didn’t even realize we had it, until I was surfing the channels and came across a lovely deer in the woods. I thought it was a respectable nature show until I saw the crosshairs and heard the shots fire. Then the visual of the deer limping off to his death takes the screen. Then they take a commercial break, and it shows advertisements for deer hunting products, to help the “sportsmen” cheat and “outwit” the deer. This shit is unbelievable to me. Maybe you see this in your neck of the woods, but me? Never. I took a stroll over to their website, and saw this little graphic:
This link gave way to a video that played some touching music in sync with beautiful wildlife. While you get swept away in the charm of the footage, it displayed information about animal overpopulation to help argue the hunter’s point and paint him as an environmentalist hero. It even invites you to “channel your inner Teddy Roosevelt.” Might as well throw Charlton Heston in there too. If you want the real Jeff Foxworthy and the “Get ‘Er Done” guy, watch “Deer & Deerhunting TV” on Versus. You get them on the show and then again on the commercials. What a mess. Hunting to eat, I get. Hunting for fun should get you kicked off the football team and locked up.
2. Chantix. This may be old news, but I’ve been touring and raising my son away from the tv, so I might have missed it. Chantix is this “stop smoking” drug and the list of side effects in the ad run 3 times as long as the initial pitch. I know the pharma ads and their rep for dressing up their product and then sliding in the side effects at the end, but this is absolutely atrocious how many neurological effects they list….from suicide to nausea to violent dreams to acts of rage. Damn I just did a search on youtube, and I guess this says it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmOftu7rxGQ I guess I’m late on this, but wow. Maybe this ad that I recently saw is the “new” ad? We’ve all seen the commercials like this, but I mean this one really goes overboard.
3. I just saw an ad for a mousetrap that guarantees you kill the mouse. It portrays a happy Crate & Barrel couple having a little dialogue regarding the death of the little mouse. I don’t know, I like mice. They don’t bug me at all, and if they did cross my path, I think I’d feed them and enable them. Why are they depicted as nasty and gross but the ultimate 90’s pet the ferret is viewed as cute? I never understood that.
So there.
